The 2018 winter season is upon us…

The 2018 winter season is upon us…

After a beautiful, long summer, winter has started and there are some very exciting things that have been planned for those lucky people who have already booked their holiday for the start of the season in December.

The ski resort officially opened on 24th November and although the snow hasn’t come as early or as thickly as we would have liked there are still 167km of pistes ready to ski down over the international area of Zermatt and Cervinia.

As well as the pistes opening we also had the ceremony for the magnificent Christmas tree that has taken pride of place in the centre of the village outside the train station. There was live music, drinks, pastries and the chance to have your picture taken with the famous Wolli in front of the tree.

There are also a whole load of special events being hosted by the Zermatt Tourist board to celebrate the start of the winter and to entice you all to come and see the village at this special time of year where we have snow falling but it is still peaceful where you can ski in relative tranquillity.

This week, Fuch’s bakery who make delicious Matterhorn shaped chocolates are doing a demonstration with the owner Philipp Fuchs and I am sure that everyone who goes will get a little sweet taster as well and who can resist Swiss chocolate?  There is also a salsa dancing lesson along with a tour of Zermatt’s very own brewery and both are free of charge to attend.  Wolli will even be making another appearance later in the week accompanying St. Nicholas who will be in the village to give sweets and peanuts to all their friends.

Back on the mountain there is a fantastic new addition to the ski area this winter.  A new lift opened earlier in November after 2 and a half years of hard work in construction.  It is the world’s highest 3S cableway lift and runs from Trocknersteg or the top of the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise lift up to Klein Matterhorn to give an even better connection to the Italian ski area.  It will be a significant improvement on the systems that are already in place and will almost eliminate the long wait that we have all been used to when travelling over to Cervinia.  There are 25 gondolas that can each seat 28 people very comfortably, ready to zip 2000 guests an hour up the mountain in only 9 minutes and if you are a hiker there is an even better treat in store.  There are up to 4 gondolas that have been decorated with thousands of Swarovski crystals and have heated leather seats to make for a very glamourous ride and the best bit, the gondolas have an integrated glass floor so you can watch the glacier 200m below you which is not a view you will forget in a hurry!

It is shaping up to be a very exciting winter and we hope you are as excited about your Zermatt holiday as we are.  If you haven’t booked yet, what are you waiting for?  There are a still a few weeks to visit before Christmas and Zermatt Holidays has a range of stylish and comfortable self-catering apartments to help make your holiday as perfect as possible and if you contact us to book your holiday we can offer you some great savings as well. The Zermatt Holidays team look forward to welcoming you to Zermatt this winter.
